Engagement stories

One of my clients had a great engagement story. She still had a very playful, kid-like side of her and whenever the ice cream truck drove up the street, she always ran outside. Her fiance rented an ice cream truck, complete with the uniform, to propose. They planned a formal wedding reception at a club, but instead of a golf cart "get away", he wanted to have an ice cream truck! Sweet.

My brother participated in a particularly creative proposal. The groom proposed, but the bride was so swamped in end of the year business transactions she said she'd get back to him. Realizing in the new year that it would be best to give an emphatic "YES!", she recruited help in the form of my brother and a few other friends. They were all on a private Carribean island and were having a tour. My brother and another accomplice managed to catch a number of iguanas and then painted the word "YES" on them. (Do you have any idea how difficult that is to do?) The groom didn't know what to first make of it, asking "Do you think there are some out there with the word 'NO' on them"?

Wedding Favors

When I moved, I came across a wedding favor that I particularly liked. I did an unusual engagement portrait for a bride and groom - they both loved to run and trained for various marathons together. They wanted something representing them, their interests and an element of the Bay Area, to create a custom label for the wine being made by his family vineyard for the wedding. We did the shoot near Fort Point and the Golden Bridge, a route where they ran regularly. I solarized the image, giving a stylized, abstracted effect to the portrait. It turned out beautifully and was a unique gift.

The label on the back has an old pair of running shoes and underneath text as follows:

This pairing is part New Yorker and part Californian and has thus created a unique blend. It has matured for two years, not in a French oak barrel, but in the city of San Francisco. After a much anticipated release on January 13th, this varietal will only get better with age. This blend can be enjoyed at a Giants' game, in the Napa Valley, or after (not during or before) a long Saturday morning run. This meritage goes well with most foods, but particularly well with pizza. You can "nurse" this blend and it might help you with Freudian slips and Oedipal complexes. Do not take yourself too seriously when drinking this wine. Do not stick your nose in the glass to smell it or swish it around in your mouth. Do not try and describe the balance or overtones. Just eat, drink, and be married.

Boys

I photograph many beautiful, formal events. Sometimes for a change, I focus on photographing something informal - such as twelve year old boys mud wrestling. They're covered in slime and look so blissfully happy in the moment.
